The ashram was started by Swami Sivananda at the age of 37 years. He built Sivananda Ashram for the good of mankind. The ashram was aptly formed as the Divine Life Society. 

The ashram has separate facilities for male & female yogis and yoga learners. The morning time is set aside for males and the evening time is set aside for the females interested in evening yoga classes. You can attend the Yoga classes on all days other than Sundays. 

You can also get free food and accommodation at the ashram. But this facility is only available for seekers who are seriously looking for spiritual meaning in their lives. If you are one of the serious spiritual seekers then you must apply already 30 days in advance. 

Parmarth Niketan

Holding the title of being the largest ashram in the Rishikesh area, Parmarth Niketan is spread over an area of eight acres. It has a total of 1000 rooms and the rates depend on the kind of accommodation you desire and the view. It is located on the banks of holy Ganges and hence it is a perfect location for yoga and meditation. 

The ashram also allows outside visitors but it requires a small amount of donation. You can benefit from a variety of courses that the ashram runs - Yoga, spirituality, Vedic heritage, and a training program for teachers. When you are at the Parmarth Niketan ashram, you should definitely attend its popular Gangaa aarti in the evening.

Located at a wonderful location in Rishikesh, you can see the holy Ganges river from Yoga Niketan Ashram, just at the opposite of the Sivananda Ashram. It has been there since 1964. 

The Yoga Niketan ashram was established by none other than Yogacharya Swami. His focus was on the Eightfold Path of Patanjali yoga shastra. He established Yoga Niketan with the sole purpose of spreading Yog vidya and spiritually through physical, mental, and spiritual training. 

The Ashram has over 100 rooms for yogis and yoga learners who visit the Ashram from around the world. It has grand lawns and impressive lawns and has meditation halls and the library. The well-qualified teachers of Yoga Niketan impart training on Hath Yoga and Raja Yoga in the ashram.  

Anand Prakash Ashram

Founded in 2007,  the Anand Prakash Ashram was started by Yogirishi Vishvketu and Chetana Panwar. Their ashram teaches Akhanda Yoga, a style of yoga developed by a team consisting of husband and wife - Yogirishi Vishvketu, well-versed in Vedic healing, Hatha, and raja yoga along with Chetana Panwar.  

The Akhanda Yoga derives non-sectarian teachings from multiple sources and lineages. It is a perfect balance of meditation, pranayama, relaxation. It is also focused on yogic philosophy and lifestyle. You can stay elsewhere or stay at the ashram itself as there’s no compulsion for you to stay at the ashram for attending all the activities at the ashram. 

You can also sign up for their yoga teacher training program that is of 200-hour and 500-hour duration. The ashram also offers ayurvedic cooking classes for those who are interested in learning it.

Osho Gangadham Ashram

If you are a fan of Osho and want to learn about him and his teachings, Osho Gangadham Ashram is the place that you should definitely visit. It is located on Badrinath Road and it will take around 10 or so minutes by car. Next to the Ganges River at Brahampuri, Osho Gangadham Ashram gives you a picturesque location to meditate and do yoga. 

You can visit the ashram throughout the year to attend active meditation practices that are taught there. It is not compulsory to attend these meditation practices. Do you want to just relax there? Well, you can do that as well. There's also an option for you to listen to discourses. You can select an accommodation as per your budgets as they have rooms that range from a simple dormitory to deluxe level private rooms.
